» Free courses commence for citizenship examination preparation

Registration has begun for free courses organised by Integration and Migration Foundation Our People (MISA) that take place throughout Estonia and help people to learn more about the Constitution and Citizenship Act.

Training courses that are organised by Tartu University are meant to offer opportunities for participation in courses in 2012 for up to 500 people who are at least 14 years old and have no specified citizenship or to citizens of third countries of Europe who are capable of speaking basic level Estonian, at a minimum. The purpose of organising the courses is to help people to obtain Estonian citizenship.

Courses are meant to prepare participants for passing an examination on the Constitution and Citizenship Act of the Republic of Estonia, introducing the conditions in applying for Estonian citizenship and the advantages of having citizenship. If appropriate, participants are given individual advice. The working languages of the course are Estonian and Russian language; if required, explanations are also given in the English language.

Over the last two years, 2,027 people have passed such courses, and 1,569 people registered for citizenship courses organised by the National examinations and Qualifications Centre. In 2009 and 2010, 149 public training courses, 31 trainings for schools and 32 personal consultations took place within the framework of the project. Apart from people with unspecified citizenship, citizens of 19 different countries – including Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Georgia, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Macedonia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Ukraine, USA and other countries – participated in the project.

Free courses on the Constitution and Citizenship Act have been organised since 2006. In total, around 6,000 people have taken part in such courses.

Courses are organised within the framework of the Estonian Integration Programme 2008-2013 and related activities are funded by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Fund for Integration for third-country nationals (EIF).

Additional information regarding registration for courses is available from the MISA website.
